Sept. 2020 Message
from the
A.T.J.S. President

The worst of the coronavirus pandemic seems to have occurred in July, when Texas was averaging nearly 9,000 new cases a day.  Things have dropped off since then, but the current daily average is about 4,000 new cases, far above the levels experienced in March through June.  At these levels, there is no hope for re-opening indoor clubs for large gatherings.  The long performing arts shutdown is really starting to hit home.  On September 8, Cap City Comedy Club announced that it was closing after 30 years of operation.  It was an excellent venue for ATJS for 13 ½ years, and replacing it will be a challenge.
The new Austin Traditional Jazz Society season has been put on hold.  When things quiet down we will announce a shortened season and get live concerts moving again.  In the meantime, we have some YouTube videos which have not been previously published on our handout Central Texas Jazz on the Internet.  All of these bands have appeared on the ATJS stage, and some of the video was shot there.
The Austin Jazz Society ran an August livestream event featuring the David Jellema Quartet.  Additional traditional jazz livestreams are in the works, and we will keep you posted on them.   We will also seek out new Internet videos to share with you.

In the meantime, it is our pleasure to provide links below to several live performances presented by ATJS members and friends in recent years.

Our goal must be to get through these dark times safely.  There will be plenty of live music events once the danger has passed.
Sincerely yours,
Dave Stoddard
